Bands come and go. And that’s not always a bad thing. With the passing of South African band Conqueror, members Richard and Chris decided do a new project with Mike (Brafcharge), Gavin (Goat Throne) and Lou. Inspired by the likes of Biohazard and Pantera, they added a good dose of hardcore flavor to the blend which led to the creation of FREExMONEY. With a video out for their first single ‘Cash Strapped’ and their debut EP Bad Vibes scheduled for release on September 5th, here’s a quick introduction interview with guitarist Richard Staub.
Please introduce yourself and your band.
“Hi Tim, my name’s Richard and I play guitar in FREExMONEY. Hardcore Punk from Johannesburg, South Africa.”
How did you come up with the band name FREExMONEY?
“We thought it would be a funny thing to see on a flyer, and immediately disappointing when you realize it’s a band. Free Money was already taken, so we threw an X in the middle.”
The X suggests you’re a Straight Edge band, but that’s not the case, is it?
“No, none of the guys in the band are Straight Edge. We have a lot of friends who are and we totally down with that.”
Define your sound in three words and elaborate on that.
“Hardcore Thrash Attack. An ode to the classics. GBH, Pantera, Sheer Terror, Napalm Death.”
Your debut EP, Bad Vibes, will be released on September 5th. Whats the story behind this release?
“We recorded Bad Vibes in June 2016, mixed by Michael Dahlstrom in Sweden. 7 songs in 9 minutes. It will be up for free on Bandcamp. When we get round to it, we will press some CD’s and put those up for sale.”
Where do you hope this release will get FREExMONEY?
“We don’t have much for hopes, but at this point we are enjoying writing the songs we want to write and hopefully do a bunch of splits in the future with bands from all over. The hardcore community is a beautiful thing and we are just happy to be involved.”
You’ll be touring South Africa alongside Slander in September. What else can we expect from FREExMONEY in the near future?
“We are super pumped to hang with them Italians. After the Slander tour, we are going to be putting out a split with PRESCRIPTIONDEATH from Gavle, Sweden. After that, who knows. We would love to do a Euro tour at some point! Thanks for the interview, peace!”
