Amsterdam’s finest southern hardcore act, So Called Celeste are set to release their second EP called Vultures on December 11th. News bandmembers and new influences made this EP a strong follow up on their first, self titled EP. Them being supporters of the underground DIY scene, they asked us to preview Vultures. Something we gladly agreed on doing. Prepare for four heavy, convincing and straight-forward songs.
Vultures kicks off with typical hardcore drums followed by southern guitar riffs in ‘Change By Reversal’. In my opinion, So Called Celeste created a sound of its own, what makes them one of Holland’s and maybe Europe’s most renewing bands at the moment. Judging from the first song, SCC wants to live and breath what they believe in: “I am everything that you don’t want me to be and everything that you don’t want to see. Just let me breath, I just want to live again”.
A lot of rhythm changes characterize ‘Worth The Truth’. This song reminds me of Scandinavian metal act Benea Reach, in both sound and structure. Slow guitar riffs alternate with short up tempo drum fills. A very strong song about mistakes and regret.
With ‘Fathoms Below’ SCC proves ones again that they’re not some typical modern hardcore/metal act. Their own sound contains a lot of technical guitar riffs with a southern touch mixed with a lot of drums that highlight the guitar work. In stead of low breakdowns in Drop F, So Called Celeste goes for simple drums that indicate the beat and lead singer Joel through his call out.
Heavy hitting southern guitar riffs blow your mind in title song ‘Vultures’. A great start of a dark finale. This song is about the lineup changes and all the bullshit that came along with it. This is their vision, and how they stay true to themselves and each other. And amazing song that finishes up this EP.
We can expect a lot of the guys in So Called Celeste in the future. With their ongoing tourschedule and this amazing EP coming out, kids will definitely be convinced! Support these guys to follow their dreams and buy Vultures at their release show or online. Prepare!
