After a late night out, and a bit hung over, Architects guitarist Tom shared his story with us.
LA: So, you guys had a good night out in Amsterdam yesterday?
Tom: Ha, yeah we had a great night out. Smoked some weed, drank beer, got wasted and lost our minds. I’m not feeling too well today, but I hope I feel a little better tomorrow.
LA: You guys are touring a lot. You just came back from Australia, toured the UK, the States, Canada… For a lot of European bands that’s like a dream come true. What’s it like for you?
Tom: It’s crazy… I never thought that something like this would even be possible for us. Sometimes it’s hard to appreciate and even scary. I mean, it’s such a huge experience to travel the world and be so far away from home all the time. It brought it’s problem, but it’s definitely a good experience.
LA: What has life on the road been like? You said it caused problems?
Tom: It just can be hard being around the same people all the time. You miss your friends and family… I mean I can’t complain. Home is cool for awhile, but after a few weeks I can’t wait to get back on the road, but at the same time I love to get back home after a few weeks on the road.
LA: What are your plans for 2010? More touring?
Tom: When the tour with Underoath is done, we’ll be back home for ten days. Then we’re leaving to America to do some East Coast shows and festivals like Bamboozle. After the touring we fly to L.A. We almost finished our new album and we’re gonna record it with Steve Evetts, who also produced the albums of The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Every Time I Die.
LA: So what bands are your biggest inspiration?
Tom: Ahh that’s really hard to tell. Back in the days we listened to bands like The Dillinger Escape Plan, and Every Time I Die, and those bands inspired us.
I used to listen to a song, sit down with my guitar and think of a riff that sounded like the one in the song. But over the years we really tried to create our own sound. We don’t want to sound like any other metal bands, so now we get inspired by bands like Coldplay, and incorporate that in our sound. Other bands wouldn’t want to involve that kinda stuff, but we just do what we like.
LA: Do you guys have any advice for all the youngsters that want to become huge with their band one day?
Tom: Don’t do what everyone else is doing. Don’t try to be the next Bring Me The Horizon, because there is already a band that sounds like them. There’s no point in that, because everybody will probably think that you’re worse.
LA: And my last question: What upcoming bands can you guys really recommend to give a listen?
Tom: Lower Than Atlantis. They’re not very heavy or anything, more post-hardcore/punk, but they really have their own sound and character. I really hope they’ll do well.
LA: Well thanks for your time Tom! Good luck on the show tonight, with the rest of the tours and the recordings of the new album.
