Recently, Bridge Nine Records freshly added Malfunction from Buffalo, New York to their roster. The band is currently putting the finishing touches on their full-length at GCR Audio Recording Studios with Jay Zubricky. It’ll then go off to Taylor Young of Nails and Twitching Tongues for a mix, and receive mastering at Audiosiege (Blacklisted, Integrity, Poison Idea). I caught up with vocalist Zak for some quick questions. Read on!
Please introduce yourself and your band.
“We got JD and Will on guitar, Cody on bass, Drew on drums, and I’m Zak- I sing.”
How did you come up with the band name, Malfunction?
“From one of the best hardcore bands ever the Cro Mags of course.”
Define your sound in three words and elaborate on that.
“Buffalo Style Forever. We don’t really like throwing around the bands that influence us too much, we’d rather people give us a listen and form their own opinion on us rather than basing it off of some bands that influence us. With that being said we just write music that we want to, stuff that we would enjoy listening to.”
You’ve just announced your new album, the first release since the summer of 2013 and your debut LP. Can you explain the jump in time? What can we expect from the LP?
“Yeet – we’re really excited to put out our LP. We got a little caught up in just wanting to go on tour and a few lineup changes like any hardcore band. But we’re ready for everyone to hear what we’ve been working on for a while now. I think it’s going to turn some heads.”
This month Malfunction is touring the US with Bane and Backtrack. How’s the tour been so far? How has the crowd reaction been to the Malfunction set?
“Yeah we’re on tour with two of our favorite bands right now. Bane and Backtrack mean a lot to us and we think they’re important hardcore bands. They’ve been taking care of us super well on tour and we’re thankful for that. We’ve had great reactions all the way through the tour so far and we’re excited about that. A lot of people who may have came to see another band come up to us after we play very surprised/stoked that they got to see us, and for us playing to new people is obviously the goal.”
Finally, when will Malfunction cross the pond and play Europe?
“We plan on making the trip to Europe some time after the LP drops. Nothing in stone but we will definitely make our way there soon.”
