Photo Report: Basement, Cloakroom & NewMoon @ Trix, 28 October 2014

Last night, we attended one out of the four official “comeback” shows of Basement in Europe. Even though the band had already played at BAM Festival in Barcelona on September 20th, they officially started their 4-day tour at Trix in Antwerp yesterday.

NewMoon, a band consisting of former Midnight Souls members, opened up and pleasantly surprised me with a solid set of indie punk with shoegaze influences. Compliments go out to the lighting tech for adding an extra majestical element to their show. I recommend you get your hands on their 3-track 7″ Invitation To Hold, which is available on yellow and pink colored vinyl.

Cloakroom followed but couldn’t quite get my attention. “…they are found channeling the visceral vocals of David Bazan (Pedro The Lion) laid over quiet, ethereal guitar hums that slowly grow into pounding walls of sound, at times bringing to mind a more stoned, yet delicate, Jesu.” I think Basement could’ve used a little more up-tempo band to support them and get the crowd going.

Basement got on stage a little later than planned, but got the crowd going with opener ‘Whole’. Even though guitarist Ronan Crix had to cope with a lot of technical difficulties, they band played a rather solid set mixing new tracks with older work. It’s good to have them back in the game and we’re looking forward to find out what the future has in store for them.
