Q&A: Twitching Tongues

Right before their tour with Frustration kicks off on June 1st, we had a chance to ask Twitching Tongues guitarist Taylor Young some questions. It sounds like they can’t wait to start their European tour, and so can’t we. You can now win 2×2 tickets, check here for all information.

The Sleep Therapy European tour is coming up, what do you guys think of the hardcore scene in mainland Europe?

All of Europe is amazing. We were lucky enough to be there in March of last year when our 7″ came out and we had some wild reactions.

The album dropped in March, how have the reactions been so far?

It actually came out in April. The reactions have been great so far but of course there will be negative opinions when a band sounds different. It feels great to finally have it out since it has been recorded for over a year.

What does making/playing your music mean to you?

It means everything to us. From playing live to writing to recording, the whole spectrum is my favorite thing in life. I don’t want to do anything else, ever.

We love your (unusual) sound; what bands would you say are or have been an influence for you guys as a band?

We all listen to a lot of things. When we started the band, the idea was to start a band like Type O Negative mixed with Only Living Witness, who we named the band after, as well as other 90′s Boston/New York hardcore like Sam Black Church, Life of Agony and 454 Big Block. After the demo, we decided to incorporate more elements of classic doom and death metal like Pentagram, Candlemass, Warning, Bolt Thrower and Obituary while keeping the same flavor we’ve already built.

If Twitching Tongues hadn’t worked out as well as it did, where would you see yourself now?

Ruckus would probably be a bigger band. We would have focused on that instead. We’ll never stop doing that band either, it’s just more of a fun band to make ultra ignorant music with.

What is the weirdest/funniest thing that has happened to you on tour?

We’ve had some crazy and silly shit happen but I don’t have time to type that all out. The other day, the alternator died in our van and we drove without any electronics in our van for almost an hour. No gauges, nothing.

You guys are playing a lot of shows and have started to play some big tours a long way from home. How do you manage to combine tour life and the situation at home?

It’s not too bad. I have a recording studio so I just work when I’m home. Everyone else’s jobs are similar, except for Keith [Paull]. He couldn’t get off work for the European tour so we have our friend Nic Samayoa, who sings in HARNESS, filling in on bass for us. Check out Harness ASAP.

If you could choose any band in the world, hardcore or not, with who would you like to play a show?

My dream line up for a Twitching Tongues show would be: Type O Negative/Carnivore, Candlemass, BreakdownKickback, and Twitching Tongues. One of those is impossible though.

What places in the world do you really want to go to on tour?

Australia and Japan. I’m hoping we can make those happen in the next year or so.

What is the ultimate goal of Twitching Tongues?

We just want to play everywhere we possibly can, and do it with bands we like.

Off-Topic: Ukraine Gay Pride Organizer Assaulted

After No Omega shared the above picture via All Out, we found out about the incidents around the Ukraine Gay Pride on Monday. The man that’s being assaulted is organizer Svyatoslav Sheremet, head of  the Gay Forum of Ukraine. Moments after he met with the press to announce the cancellation of Kiev Pride, a group of unidentified attackers assaulted him without knowing their actions were being documented. The anti-gay hate crime was caught on camera, not that the video material can be shocking.

Gay Star News reports:

Ukrainian capital’s first ever gay pride was cancelled yesterday amid fears of attacks from far right thugs.

Police advised pride organizers to abandon the march through the center of Kiev just 30 minutes before it was due to start, claiming 500 ultra-right football hooligans were en route to the rally point with the intention of preventing the event from going ahead.

Two activists were beaten up and tear gassed by a dozen youths in central Kiev after those already gathered for the march were evacuated with police escort.

This is rather off-topic, but we wanted to make you aware of this situation. Everyone can form their own opinion about homosexuality and same-sex marriage, but everyone should be treated equally and be respected for living their own lifestyle. Spread the word.

Live Report: Every Time I Die, Cancer Bats, Set Your Goals & Make Do And Mend – Dynamo, 19 May 2012

On a nice, sunny Saturday evening (May 19th) we gathered at Dynamo in Eindhoven (NL) for a promising night filled with good music. It was the very last night for Every Time I Die to play alongside Cancer Bats, Set Your Goals and Make Do And Mend, before flying to Russia for another run of shows. Set Your Goals and Make Do And Mend just started their tour in the UK yesterday, and Cancer Bats will also continue touring Europe, playing different festivals throughout. So here’s what we thought about Saturday’s show.

Hartford, Connecticut foursome Make Do And Mend played a solid, but raw punk rock show, and got the first heads banging still early in the evening. Dynamo in Eindhoven was already fairly filled up, and the crowd seemed to enjoy themselves, a handful of people fiercely singing along to all songs. Singer and guitarist James Carroll left the crowd pleased with a wise lesson learned from Every Time I Die guitarist Andy Williams: “To all young, touring bands: don’t ever lose your teeth, and don’t lose your claws, because that will be the end of you.

Cali sextet Set Your Goals was in a party mood, and played a very energetic set. Their infectious pop punk made the crowd jump up and down, and the first stage dives were a fact. Both vocalists Jordan Brown and Matt Wilson sounded a lot better, and sang more in tune than at Groezrock Festival three weeks ago, and the show was a good warming up for the next two performances.

Canadians in Cancer Bats brought their share of trashy rock/metal to the table, and played a strong set. For all Europeans it was the first time to see the guys perform material off of their latest record Dead Set On Living, which came out on April 16th. The audience was finally fully awake, and were moshing and stagediving throughout the band’s set. The guys rounded up their show with an explosive Black Sabbath cover, having friends on stage supporting with extra percussion.

As Every Time I Die vocalist Keith Buckley said: “The last show of the tour, is always the best show of the tour.” The band played a show them and the crowd won’t easily forget. The guys blasted through their set in 45 minutes, giving the crowd the time of their lives. A young girl experienced her first stagedive, people were jumping of the sound engineering table, and even all bar personnel were head banging throughout the show. It was a great party, and a show that won’t easily be forgotten.
